Theme
Open Access has a profound effect on the role of academic libraries. Focus is shifted from being a gatekeeper for information created elsewhere towards being actively involved in supporting the creation and dissemination of scientific and scholarly information produced within the parent institution of the library.
New competencies have to be strengthened, technical plattforms for publishing and archiving have to be developped, the streams of finance have to be redirected from paying for getting access to paying for providing access, i.a. OA journal publication fees and repositories.
The growth of repositories and their coordination on a national and an international level are exciting challenges that involve both university libraries and national libraries.
There are numerous Open Access conferences taking place but they seldom target the role of libraries in connection with Open Access. This theme is very timely at an IFLA conference and we also hope that it will put the issue of Open Access higher on the agenda of IFLA.
Target audience
IFLA delegates and other interested. Priority is given to IFLA delegates in case of overbooking.
